Job Summary:
The School Counselor plays a vital role in the educational development and well-being of students within the school community. As a School Counselor, you will provide guidance and support to students, helping them navigate personal, social, and academic challenges. You will collaborate with teachers, parents, and administrators to promote students' overall success and mental well-being.
Responsibilities:
1. Provide individual and group counseling to students, addressing their academic, career, and personal/social needs.
2. Assess students' strengths, weaknesses, and interests through interviews, assessments, and observations.
3. Develop and implement comprehensive counseling programs that meet the specific needs of students.
4. Assist students in setting and achieving academic and career goals through counseling and guidance sessions.
5. Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and parents to identify and address students' behavioral, emotional, and academic issues.
6. Conduct classroom presentations on topics such as study skills, career planning, and stress management.
7. Facilitate conflict resolution and mediation sessions between students as necessary.
8. Provide crisis intervention and support to students experiencing personal or emotional difficulties.
9. Collaborate with external agencies and professionals to provide additional support to students with special needs or challenging circumstances.
10. Maintain accurate and confidential student records, ensuring compliance with legal and ethical guidelines.
11. Stay updated on current counseling techniques, educational trends, and relevant legislation to enhance counseling services.
12. Participate in professional development activities and conferences to expand knowledge and skills.
13. Contribute to the development and implementation of school-wide initiatives focused on student well-being and success.
14. Support and promote a positive and inclusive school climate that fosters respect, understanding, and appreciation for diversity.
Qualifications and Skills:
1. Master's degree in School Counseling or a related field.
2. Valid state certification or license in School Counseling.
3. Proven experience in providing counseling services to students in an educational setting.
4. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and active listening skills.
5. Strong knowledge of counseling theories, techniques, and intervention strategies.
6. Ability to build rapport and establish trusting relationships with students, parents, and staff.
7. Demonstrated understanding of student development and the ability to address a wide range of student needs.
8. Familiarity with educational systems, curriculum, and career planning resources.
9. Proficiency in conducting assessments, interpreting data, and developing appropriate interventions.
10. Ethical and professional behavior, maintaining confidentiality and adhering to legal and ethical guidelines.
11. Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
